In this installment of Kratom Stories, I sit down with Mike Overstreet, popularly known as The Kratom Guy. He opens up about his transition from a harrowing battle with opioid dependency to finding solace and pain relief in Kratom. Sharing a universally resonant struggle of managing chronic pain post a wrestling injury, Mike's personal narrative portrays Kratom as a beacon of hope, not just for him, but many others trapped in the throes of addiction and the debilitating side effects of traditional pain medication.

His journey didn't just end with personal recovery; it propelled him into advocacy, leading to the creation of The Kratom Guy podcast and the Botanical Action Network (BAN), a group dedicated to supporting and advocating for individuals entangled in legal difficulties due to Kratom. He discusses BAN's focus on unjust Kratom-related incarcerations, shedding light on cases like Marshall Price and Shaina Brown to emphasize the draconian response to Kratom in certain legal jurisdictions.

Mike's story is a compelling testament to the value of Kratom in pain management and addiction recovery, provoking discussion on advocacy, legality, and responsible use.

Host & Producer / BAN Co-Founder

Mike Overstreet is the host and producer of the Kratom Guy Show, a podcast focusing on the latest in kratom news, science and current events, as well as other natural alternatives to prescription pharmaceuticals. He is also co-founder of the newly formed Botanical Action Network (BAN). A former heroin addict and Suboxone user, Mike now travels across the country to advocate for continued safe and legal access to kratom. He’s appeared in numerous publications and other podcasts to discuss his personal experiences with using kratom and advocacy work for consumers, including CBS Boston and The Free Thought Project.

BAN was formed organically after the in-custody death of Marshall Price in, who was convicted of “trafficking” kratom after police pulled him over in an illegal traffic stop and search. BAN is a grassroots movement of advocates and activists leveraging their skills in investigative journalism, education, justice reform, and guerrilla marketing tactics to help fight for continued safe access to kratom and all plant medicine. To date, Mike and BAN have helped to crowdfund over $32k for the family of Marshall Price and Shaina Brown’s legal fund, a victim of another illegal stop and resulting “trafficking” charge.
